Have Mind, will Travel [sonnet]

Posted on Updated on

If you are controlled by some other force —
by people or obsessional ideas —
then we cannot have normal intercourse:
you dangling on the strings of puppeteers.
Maybe your mind by dogma has been caged
and by that blinkered grid you judge the world.
Perhaps with spiteful hearsay you’ve engaged
as in some vengeful vortex you were swirled.
But if you only represent your soul
and have no blunt or sharpened axe to grind
and don’t live in some other’s pigeonhole
then we will soon in travel be entwined.
For only when we’ve freed our hearts and thoughts
can we begin to be true astronauts.
